The main function of the lab is to conduct physical-chemical analysis for every unit at our institute and for other institutions according the contract.
Using classical chemical methods, we do quantitative analysis of the following elements: Cu, Ca, Zn, Cd, Al, Ti, Pb, Sn, As, N, Sb, S, Cr, Mo, Cl, Mn, Fe, Ni, Co. In case of relatively low concentrations of elements in the sample we use physical methods of analysis: Polarography, photocalorimetry, spectrometry. We use X-ray phase analysis and derivatography to determine structure of compounds. X-ray diffraction is used to study phase structure of solid samples, structure and parameters of individual compounds and approximate size of solid particles. Polarography is used to determine quantitively low concentrations (10-5÷10-6 M) of different ions: Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb.Photocolorimetry is used to do quantitative analysis of Fe, Ni, Cu, Bi andothers.Derivatography is used to make thermogravimetric measurements: moisture and volatile compounds (CO2, SO2, organic compounds and others) are determined in solid samples. We use atomic adsorption spectrometry to find concentration of different elements (Fe,Cu, Mn, Zn, Ni) in the range of 10-4%. Differential scanning microcalorimetry is used to write curves of differential analysis in the range of 20-500°C as in ambient as well as in inert atmosphere.
We also conduct research related to ecology and agro-ecotoxicology. Currently we study soil near the waste from production at Kazreti-Bolnisi and Chiatura-Zestafoni.
